Ioan
Dragos Dimitriu
PIANIST | CULTURAL ENTREPRENEUR
From the Berlin Philharmonie and Vienna’s Konzerthaus to international festivals, Ioan-Dragoș Dimitriu has built a career at the meeting point of pianistic performance and cultural innovation.
Born in Brașov in 1991, he began studying piano at the age of six with Viorica Burcică and Francisca Lupu. A formative encounter with pianist and professor Corina Ibănescu transformed his artistic path and opened the way to Vienna. He went on to study at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna with Martin Hughes and Stefan Arnold.
In 2011, he made his international debut at the Berlin Philharmonie with Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5, the “Emperor”. He subsequently performed across Europe and in Japan as a soloist and chamber musician, receiving more than 25 first prizes at international competitions. Career highlights include Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue at the Vienna Konzerthaus in 2018 and a chamber recital with cellist Gary Hoffman at the Toamna Muzicală Clujeană Festival in 2025.
He founded the Ton der Jugend Symphony Orchestra in Vienna, bringing together 250 musicians from 17 countries for more than 14 international productions, including performances at the Musikverein and Konzerthaus. He also initiated the Transylvanian International Piano Competition and co-founded Brașov’s TAMTAM Festival with pianist Horia Mihail.
From 2020 to 2023, he led the Brașov Philharmonic, expanding its international collaborations and artistic programming. Projects developed during his tenure included a UK tour with Maxim Vengerov, concerts featuring Mischa Maisky and Igudesman & Joo, and initiatives that contributed to the orchestra’s Beethoven anniversary concert at the Berlin Philharmonie in 2024.
He is currently Director of Development and Innovation at SoNoRo, Artistic Director of the Sound District Floreasca Festival, and founder of Sound Explorers, an initiative bringing live music and interactive musical education into schools across Romania.
For Ioan-Dragoș Dimitriu, music is also about what it makes possible: new encounters, new generations of musicians, and new ways of bringing culture closer to people.
